Nell Smith Signs to Faber Alt. + New Album 'Anxious' released today!
We’re delighted to announce we have signed the music of Nell Smith to the Faber Alt. roster.
Born in Leeds, Nell listened to music in utero following her mother’s plan to give her familiar sounds once she was born to aid her in settling more easily.
As she grew, she was attracted to music and quickly developed an interest in artists including Herman Dune, Arcade Fire, Metronomy, The Flaming Lips, David Bowie, Fleet Foxes, and MGMT. Attending festivals with her family, Nell experienced live music from the age of 2 and grew more and more interested. She started performing live at the age of 11, playing alongside established musicians and writing her own songs. In 2020 she recorded an album of Nick Cave cover versions under the tutelage of Wayne Coyne.
Her debut album, Where the Viaduct Looms was released in 2021, and her new album Anxious is released today on Bella Union. Nell worked with Jack and Lily Wolter from Penelope Isles on this album, and some songs were co-written with Shred Kelly. The album is a mesmerising collection of songs exploring teenage highs, lows and uncertainties. The music reflects raw teenage emotions of apprehension, love, travel, gratefulness, ambition and grief and these moods are explored throughout the tracks with an instrumental and at times whimsical approach, bringing joy even to the darkest of songs. Anxious is sadly a posthumous release following Nell’s untimely death in a car accident on October 6, 2024.
Profits from the album will go to The Nell Smith Memorial Fund which directly supports young musicians that need a helping hand.
