anna meredith releases 'anno'

Anna Meredith has released a new album titled, Anno, a boundary-pushing collaboration with the Scottish Ensemble. Released on August 17 on Moshi Moshi records, the LP intertwines Anna's original compositions with Vivaldi's Four Seasons, in an innovative, electronic re-imagination of the original work, marking an impeccable blend of old and new, 'classical' and 'popular'.

Anno began life as an immersive, 360 degree experience featuring beautiful visuals by Eleanor Meredith. The sixty-minute work for string orchestra was premiered by the Scottish ensemble in 2016 at Spitalfields Festival. It was recently performed again at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Anna, a former composer for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, recorded the album with the Scottish Ensemble, and the album is available in a range of formats. In addition to digital and double vinyl copies, Anno is available as an exclusive binaural recording, allowing the listener to experience the music in a unique, spatial capacity.

Anno was recently featured as BBC Radio 6 'Album of the Day'.

"Magical...Italian Baroque Meets Techno"

- The Times

“a near eight minute whirlwind of beautiful strings and obscure electronic inputs that prove Meredith's genre-defying sound”

- The Line of Best Fit

“Exquisite… confirms Meredith as one of the most interesting young pioneers in the increasingly intertwined world of classical and electronica”

- The Irish Times

“[The Vivaldi is] razed and reshaped suspensefully with syncopated percussion and dramatic synthesizer...its swift shifts in direction recall the melodrama of an action movie more so than the naturalistic world”

- Pitchfork

“a harmonious call-and-response between a European classical tradition and modernity, a mere 1,200 seasons apart”

- Electronic Sounds

Anno vaults between pastoral pomp and Meredith’s trademarks… thrillingly nauseous”

- The Guardian

One of the most dramatic, influential and celebrated pieces of music ever written, and one of the most exciting, innovative and idiosyncratic composers of today's generation... Anno is a collaboration between Scottish Ensemble, the UK's leading professional string orchestra, and the critically-acclaimed composer, performer and producer Anna Meredith. It combines movements from Vivaldi's instantly recognisable masterpiece, The Four Seasons, with new music by Anna and bespoke visuals by her sister, visual artist and illustrator Eleanor Meredith. The live experience, premiered in London's Oval Space in June 2016 as part of the Spitalfields Music Summer Festival, represents the passing of a year (hence, Anno). In parts, it is achingly, bittersweetly beautiful - in others, fierce and breathtaking. Both the London premiere, and its Scottish premieres in November of the same year, received critical praise. This mini documentary, filmed across the two premieres, offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creation of the piece as well as exclusive live footage from the performances. Anna Meredith announces the release of 'Anno', a boundary-pushing collaboration with the Scottish Ensemble, in which experimental, utterly fresh partner pieces of work by the classical-electronic composer are intertwined with Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The result is a continuous musical experience, blending old and new, 'classical' and 'popular' without distinction and Anna's fascinating new pieces binding seamlessly with the original work.
