Stick in the Wheel
Ian Carter & Nicola Kearey are the driving force behind new English folk traditionalists, Stick In The Wheel - “Britain's most exciting new folk band” UNCUT magazine.
Their second album, Follow Them True (2018) examined rituals and cycles, the past repeating itself, ghosts and thieves, land and place. It continues to question the notion of what folk music is, and what it means to be making folk music right now. It expands the radically raw sound of their debut to include electronic and found sounds, using a broader sonic palette to create greater depth, yet at the same time remaining totally connected with the tradition.
Their commissions include site-specific compositions for Musicity Global (The Finnish Church, Rotherhithe), Claudia Molitor’s Singing Bridge (Totally Thames Festival), and Voiced for NOMAD Projects (Phytology Bethnal Green Nature Reserve). They are recipients of the Malcolm Taylor Grant for Collections for their English Folk Field Recordings Project and four times BBC Folk Award nominated (Best Group, Best Traditional Track twice, Horizon Award).
Ian Carter is also a record producer (Wolf People, Ghostpoet) and releases electronic music as EAN (Cosmic Bridge). He was a founding member of Various Production (XL). His film and TV work includes compositions for Toby Amies’ nowness.com and National Geographic.
“Respecting folk music’s past while uprooting it from the pastoral, the UK group’s politically minded album mixes acoustic and electronic instruments across original songs and traditionals”
